Fly a hang glider like an expert

We have all dreamed, at least once in our lives, of flying through the air like a bird. Fortunately, there are many ways to conquer the sky nowadays. Thanks to hang-gliding, for example, you will surely taste the infinite pleasures of free flight. How do you steer a hang glider? What training should you follow? And what are the safety rules? How does a hang glider work? We tell you everything in this article.

How do you steer a hang glider?

The piloting of this big kite with a rigid base requires a little physical effort. This is due to the fact that the pilot maintains a lying position in a harness. In hang-gliding, take-off and landing are mainly done on foot. The pilot has to start from a slope and run for several metres before leaving the ground. The piloting system, on the other hand, is based entirely on body movements.
If you want to turn, for example, you simply tilt your wings in the desired direction. In fact, to steer, all you have to do is move to the right or left. The control bar on the trapeze is mainly used to perform more intrepid actions such as pitching up or diving. Thus, it will create accelerations or rotations.

Learning to fly a hang glider

You have decided to learn to fly hang gliding and you want to know how it works? This discipline is supervised by the French Federation of Free Flight (FFVL). It is essential to know that several schools and structures in France offer introductory and advanced flying courses. State-qualified instructors will accompany you throughout your training.
To succeed in your training, there are introductory courses of 3 or 5 days. It is a discovery of the activity with sessions of school slopes, an educational tandem flight and sometimes even a first supervised flight. You will also find complete training courses to become a professional in hang-gliding.

Hang gliding safety rules

One of the most important safety rules to consider is to follow the weather. It is imperative to know the weather conditions before practicing. It is not necessarily when there are many aircraft in flight that the risk of collision is greatest. On the contrary, hang gliding accidents are more frequent when there are fewer people in the air. Also, it is strongly advised to fly with equipment that is appropriate for the activity.
Indeed, the more powerful a wing is, the heavier it is because of its inertia. So, a pilot flying with a very powerful equipment compared to his level can be very dangerous. Finally, you must always be attentive and have a wide field of vision. At that moment you have to keep a good distance to other hang gliders.
